I have closed my fresh food store, but continue to be your Real Food Gatekeeper, recommending you products, suppliers, shops or websites. Just be attentive, because not all the products available at a given address are what I would call "truly nourishing and sustainable". If a shop/supplier is not on this list, that doesn`t necessarily mean it is not a good address. I simply share with you the ones that I have worked with / bought from over the years and that I recommend.

Per supplier
  • Agricovert: fresh, local, organic fruits, vegetables, eggs, raw dairy, sourdough bread, chicken, meat plus a wide selection of dry foods. They also collaborate with a Southern cooperative to offer more variety. Very strong social component in their project (integrating less-qualified people back into the work-life etc.). In and around Gembloux, Louvain La Neuve etc. and in Brussels www.agricovert.be
  • Veeakker: meat from Galloway cows that spend all their lives grazing natural reserves in Flanders (100% grass-fed). Available only online www.veeakker.be and in their shop in Leuven. They also organize delivery tours in Flanders and might soon start home-deliveries.
  • Pintafish: wild-caught, sustainable fish, incl. wild salmon. In the beginning they focused solely on local Belgian fish, however they realized that they were too small to really make a difference in terms of improving the sustainability of fishing methods. At the same time they realized that sustainably working, small fisheries in the UK, Spain and even Alaska are still struggling to survive, and so they decided to collaborate in order to support the international sustainable food movement. This is why now they also offer fish from further away. Available at www.pintafish.eu, www.veeakker.be, at Färm, Belgomarkt and Topino. They also organize delivery tours in Flanders and might soon start home-deliveries.
  • Bouch'Bio: highest quality organic meat, poultry, charcuterie from Belgian farms. Stéphane produces the ONLY organic charcuterie completely FREE of additives and sodium nitrite (all other bio brands do have some - check the labels...). Many of his products are also free of lactose etc. He only uses high quality, unrefined Guerande salt and knows exactly where his ingredients come from - plus he sources most of them locally! At a recent GLOBAL butcher competition he was THE ONLY one fulfilling ALL these criteria! He was shocked by that himself, for him it is simply a matter of wanting to know what he is eating and feeling good about eating his own products... In Namur and on Brussels Albert, Brugmann and Woluwe markets
  • Coprosain/Coprobio: organic meat and poultry, fresh vegetables and fruit, bread. The charcuterie still often contains some additives and sodium nitrite unfortunately. In Braine-l'Alleud, Ath and on Brussels markets (Flagey, St. Catherine)
  • Topino: distribution of Bouch'Bio meat/charcuterie, sourdough bread made from ancient grains of boulangerie Legrand (Namur) and other farm products. www.topino.net
  • Gasap: if you want to join a purchase group and support a farmer directly without any intermediate. www.gasap.be
  • Färm: my preferred chain of cooperative bio shops in Brussels. Contrary to some other bio shops, they make sure to not carry brands that have been taken over by multinationals (i.e. Provamel or Pukka)
  • Others fresh: Roots (shop close to Schuman sourcing directly from producers), Ignace Bio (raw dairy products on Auderghem and St. Catherine markets), Jacques Defrenne (raw dairy on Brugmann and Chasseur Ardennais markets), Belgomarkt (shop for only Belgian foods in Boniface area)
  • Others dry: Dr. Goerg (coconut products), Keimling (raw foods). Superfoods.nl, Synergistics Europe and Ergomax (supplements)
Per food category
  • Fresh local fruits and vegetables from small-scale organic farms: Agricovert www.agricovert.be (choose a depot close to you on their website or visit their store "Transistore" in Etterbeek). Agricovert delivers in Brussels and Wallonia. My friends Stan and Laetitia also just started their organic farm in Wallonia. They will distribute organic baskets also in Brussels. This is their website: https://ochampdabeilles.wordpress.com/. You also find fresh organic veggies and fruits directly from the producers on Tuesday and Friday mornings at Coprosain on Flagey market and on Saturdays at the market "L`heureux nouveau" in St. Gilles. You could also check out the site of Gasap, where you can look for and join a buying group (groupe d'achat) in Brussels, Wallonia or Flanders (Voedselteams). There are different "systems", some more flexible than others. Le Marché de Tanneur is also great, however, I find it is getting too massive and their produce is increasingly not small-scale or local anymore.
  • Non-local fruits and vegetables (i.e. sweet potatoes, bananas, oranges), directly from small-scale cooperatives in the respective countries: www.agricovert.be. The non-local produce is marked by either indicating the country of origin (i.e. FR) or by referring to the collaborating cooperative (i.e. IN)
  • Extra fresh organic eggs from small producers (cannot be compared with organic eggs from the supermarket): www.agricovert.be, Jacques Defrenne on Brugmann and Chasseur Ardennais markets. La Bouch'Bio on Albert, Brugmann and Woluwe markets. L`heureux nouveau market on Saturdays in St. Gilles
  • Raw organic milk from Jersey cows milk (on demand also from goats or sheep when in season): www.agricovert.be, Ignace Bio on St. Catherine and Auderghem markets. Jacques Defrenne on Brugmann and Chasseur Ardennais markets. Marché de Tanneurs, Färm (only available on certain days). Tan also gets raw milk on Tuesdays, but not from Jersey cows.
  • Raw organic butter and organic raw milk cheeses (from goats, sheep and Jersey cows milk): www.agricovert.be, Ignace Bio on St. Catherine and Auderghem markets. Jacques Defrenne on Brugmann and Chasseur Ardennais markets. Marché de Tanneurs, Färm.
  • 100% grass-fed Galloway meat from natural reserves in Belgium, incl. bones and liver: www.veeakker.be (they organize delivery tours outside of Brussels only). Hopefully soon available at Belgomarkt as well.
  • Fresh organic meat (beef, lamb, porc, venison): www.agricovert.be, www.topino.net. La Bouch'Bio on Albert (Thursday) and Brugmann (Friday) market. Coprobio on St. Catherine Market (Wednesday). Veeakker (Galloway beef and venison when in season), Färm (Coprobio meat)
  • Liver:  La Bouch'Bio on Albert (Thursday) and Brugmann (Friday) market. Coprobio on St. Catherine Market (Wednesday). At www.topino.net you can order chicken liver.
  • Bones: La Bouch'Bio on Albert (Thursday) and Brugmann (Friday) market (ideally pre-order).
  • Fresh organic chicken: www.agricovert.be (only whole chickens), www.topino.net (whole chickens and separate parts, like breasts, legs and also liver, they also have duck and turkey). La Bouch'Bio on Albert (Thursday) and Brugmann (Friday) market. Coprobio on St. Catherine Market (Wednesday)
  • Roasted organic chicken (only roasted with herbs and own juice, no added oil):  La Bouch'Bio on Albert (Thursday) and Brugmann (Friday) market (only sometimes!)
  • Organic Charcuterie (completely FREE of additives, only made with highest quality salt and mostly local ingredients): La Bouch'Bio on Albert (Thursday), Brugmann (Friday) and Woluwe St. Pierre (Saturday) market or via www.topino.net.
  • Beef Jerkey: La Bouch'Bio on Albert (Thursday) and Brugmann (Friday) market
  • Porc Grease (rendered lard) and Duck Grease: La Bouch'Bio on Albert (Thursday) and Brugmann (Friday) market
  • Sustainable fresh fish: Belgomarkt (1x per week fresh, otherwise frozen), Färm (1x per week) or directly from Veeakker / Pintafish. Veeakker also has sustainable mussles when in season.
  • Sustainable fish (sardines, wild salmon, mackerel, tuna) canned in glass jars and in olive oil: Färm, Tan
  • Fresh sourdough bread from ancient grains (Einkorn, kamut, timilia) and also spelt: www.topino.net , on Chatelain market (a new guy making bread from sprouted ancient grains), Matinal (Rue Franz Merjay 6, close to Ma Campagne / Chatelain)
  • Fresh sourdough bread (spelt and rye): www.agricovert.be, Jacques Defrenne on Brugmann and Chasseur Ardennais markets
  • RAW lacto-fermented veggies: Belgomarkt
  • RAW local honey: https://ochampdabeilles.wordpress.com
  • Whole grains and pulses: Vajra brand (available in many bioshops) because they source their products as locally as possible, whereas many other, cheaper brands source their products from outside the EU (often China). With regards to bioshops, my favorite in Brussels is Färm, because they really try to keep their portfolio as clean as possible of brands that are owned by multinationals, such as Provamel or Pukka.
  • Herbs and spices: Herboristerie Desmecht and Färm
  • Oatmeal from sprouted oats, sprouted buckwheat, psyllium husk, raw cacao mass and cacao butter, hemp seed protein powder...: Order via Keimling in Germany  (send an email, since standard no delivery to Belgium). At Färm you can also find psyllium and hemp seed powder.
  • Coconut Products of the best qualityDr. Goerg Coconut Products Coconut Oil, Coconut Cooking Fat, Coconut Butter (Mousse), Coconut Milk, Coconut Water, Coconut Flakes, Desiccated Coconut... all made from young coconuts within 72 hours after harvesting. Only available online, no shop in whole Belgium carries them, since they are not distributed via Belgian wholesalers.
  • Freshly pressed flax seed oil (pressed freshly every week, only has a 3 week best before date): The only company I am aware of who presses it freshly is Keimling in Germany. You have to send them an email, since they do not offer standard delivery to Belgium. Order via Keimling in Germany
